Bob Guercio Passing

Bob Guercio was ill for nearly a year, after he completely lost use of his legs.  He was being cared for by our local hospice organization for the last couple of weeks.  So far, it appears he will be cremated and probably placed in a V.A, cemetery, no public services.
Bob has crossed the Rainbow Bridge and joined our close circle of friends.

Bob Guercio

Sorry to report the passing of Bob Guercio, W2HCL.
Bob was a good friend and always had an interesting story to relate.
We spent many happy trips to pick up large quantities of pistachios,
to distribute to fellow Engineers at the Broadcast Center!
After about distributing around 500 pounds, we were politely asked to stop, because the janitorial staff was complaining about the thick coating of shells on the B.C. floors!

As more information is received, it will be posted here.

Hi Dave,

It saddens me greatly to have read about the passing of Russ Gainor.   Russ was a special kind of friend. We did get to be involved is some high  jinx that was just good fun.  I don't know how many of you realize that Russ was a sound effects technician prior to working in the PC studios.  If you can locate this publication "RADIO SOUND EFFECTS: Who did it, and how, in the era of live broadcasting.    by Robert L Mott.  Go to pg 115 .  The article talks about Russ on the Ernie Kovacs Show and Captain Kangaroo Show also.
I found this when I did a Google search for  "who did sound effects on the Ernie Kovacs show when it aired on CBS"
Les Burkhardt

Here is the published obituary for Russ:

GAINOR--Oscar, 90, known to his family and friends as "Russ," passed away peacefully on August 16, 2016 surrounded by his family. Russ shared a home with his loving wife of 22 years, Elaine, and leaves behind three sons, two stepchildren, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was born in East New York, Brooklyn on May 1, 1926, but grew up in the Bronx. He graduated from James Monroe High School and New York University. Russ was a wounded Veteran of World War II and was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He fought in the Battle of the Ardennes, serving General Patton's Third Army, 94th Division, 302nd Infantry. Russ retired from CBS Broadcasting after 40 years of service. He first worked as a sound effects man in radio and continued his work in TV, working on such shows as: the Ed Sullivan Show, The Ernie Kovacs Show, The Jack Parr Show and more. Russ was full of joy and was always smiling. He loved to travel, play bridge, draw, garden and was a sports enthusiast. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and had a sense of humor that endured to the end. Funeral services were held at Gutterman's Funeral Home in Woodbury, NY on Thursday, August 18, 2016. Shiva will be held at his home on Friday, August 19th and Sunday, August 21st.

I received a message yesterday that Sid Bean (from the SFX department) has passed on.  In contacting some of the people who worked with him, I also found out that there will be a service for Sid on Monday, August 1st.

Grace United Methodist Church
200-08 Murdoch Avenue
St Albans (Jamaica) NY  11412

Sid worked for many years on As The World Turns, both in the Broadcast Center, and in Studio 52 on 76th St and 1st avenue.  Sid also worked at that location for Edge of Night, even back in the era when the show was broadcast live.

Naeder, Sr. Addendum

Bill Naeder Jr’s phone number is: 917-834-3212917-834-3212, and he prefers phone (rather than email) contact, so give him a call for the detailed info.

I spoke yesterday with Joe Marcus (who works with Billy on the Early Show).. and he said that Bill Sr, had suffered a fall, and broke his collar bone.  And while in the hospital, they discovered an advanced cancer, which was not treatable.  So, he went back home, and I believe was receiving hospice care, before he passed (which I think was on Sunday or Monday past.).
Reported by Ray Sills
The next CBS Retirees Luncheon will be held at Regina's Steak House in Teaneck, NJ, on May 17th.
Full information will appear on our website, shortly.
The address will be posted in the next blog.

Sad news... Bill Naeder, Sr. has passed away.

No further information at present, but Bill Naeder, Jr. can
be reached at: Bill02 at but he only checks this
address, sporadically.
