Two Tubes pix brought to mind that dear man, Charley Markey, a maintenance man at 15 VAN during the 50s. Charley was conscientious to a fault. While transporting an image orthicon on a maintenance cart he was stunned to see the tube rolling off the cart. It wasn't Charley's day. The tube broke, and he offered to have CBS deduct part of his salary each week until it was paid. He was mortified and thought his career had ended. But CBS tech bosses were Tommy Thompson, Charley Christian, et al. and "there but for the grace of God" could have been any one of us. Mr. Markey went on to become one of the fine early day's maintenance men of Grand Central studios, the Video Man's best friend.
Cordially,
